Service Description

Designed for: People supporting a person with epilepsy who has been prescribed buccal midazolam for use in the event of a seizure-related emergency at home or in the community. Next 2024 Dates: Fri 19 April, 10.00-16.00 (live, online) Fri 26 April, 10.00-16.30 (in person, Edinburgh, EH12) Tues 21 May, 10.00-16.00 (live, online) Wed 29 May, 10.00-16.30 (in person, Edinburgh, EH12) Fri 21 June, 10.00-16.00 (live, online) Wed 26 June, 10.00-16.30 (in person, Edinburgh, EH12) Content: First section: What is epilepsy What causes epilepsy How do we make a diagnosis including differential diagnosis Types of seizures Treatment options First Aid Status Epilepticus Care planning and recording mechanisms Risk Assessment SUDEP Sources of support and information Stigma Psychological/psychiatric co-morbidities Psychosocial issues Cultural awareness Second section: What is midazolam, including different preparations / concentrations Indications for the use of midazolam Appropriate doses Benefits of using buccal midazolam Recognising signs of respiratory depression Possible difficulties in administration (e.g. excessive salivation, injury to mouth) Potential side effects Actions if buccal midazolam is ineffective Identifying and using individual's buccal midazolam care plan Secure storage and safe disposal Duty of care / responsibility and accountability Practical demonstration using visual aids Opportunity to work through the correct procedure and demonstrate correct measurements When to seek medical help Awareness of the potential for misuse Awareness of relevant local policies Interactive case discussions ​​ This course is assessed and content reflects the Epilepsy Specialist Nurses Association (ESNA) June 2019 Guidelines. Our expert trainers also meet the ESNA guidelines on trainer qualifications and experience. This course usually takes place in person, so attendees can enjoy a more practical experience but occasionally open courses are delivered online. Please note the format before booking. Online courses are taught live online, through Zoom so attendees will need access to a computer. You will be emailed joining details once your booking purchase is complete. Price is per person and a certificate of attendance will be issued after the course.
